    Removing port stains

A knocked-over glass during dinner or a drop while pouring: Port stains appear in the blink of an eye, but leave behind a deep red, stubborn stain. The combination of colourings, sugars and alcohol makes port particularly difficult to remove from carpets, furniture or floors.

Swift action is crucial. The longer you wait, the further the dyes will penetrate the fibres or pores – and the less likely you are to remove the stain completely. Fortunately, with the right approach, port stains can often be completely removed. Below you can read what is best to do for each type of surface.

Voor deze vlekken geldt hetzelfde advies: Red Port, Port, Port Wine

Characteristics (anatomy) of a port stain

Port contains powerful colourings (such as anthocyanins from grapes), sugars and alcohol. The alcohol evaporates quickly, but the colourings and sugars remain. On textiles, they cause deep stains, and on hard floors, a sticky film or discolouration. Because port is often darker and thicker than regular red wine, the stain can adhere particularly well. If you allow the stain to dry, it will penetrate deeper and may cause permanent discolouration or odour. Incorrect treatment – such as hot water or scrubbing – often makes the stain worse.

Removing port stains from carpet or rugs

On carpet, port causes a deep purple stain almost immediately. The combination of sugars and colourings causes the moisture to be quickly absorbed into the fibres. With deep-pile carpets, it also easily sinks through to the backing, meaning you are dealing with a stain on multiple levels.

If you do not treat the stain quickly, the colour will become permanently fixed and cause discolouration that is difficult or impossible to remove completely. In addition, residual sugar attracts dirt, making the spot increasingly visible.

Remove excess moisture immediately and then treat only the affected area. Use a suitable cleaner that is safe for carpets and powerful enough to remove stains, such as James Stainwonder. Avoid excessive moisture and ensure that the carpet is completely dry afterwards.

    Treat with James Stainwonder

This stain can be treated with James Stainwonder. All you need is a bottle of James Stainwonder!

    • Test for colour and material resistance in an inconspicuous area: apply, let it dry completely and evaluate.
    • Allow the surface to dry completely.
    • Apply James Stainwonder to the dry stain by turning the bottle upside down, placing the opening of the bottle on the stain and treating the entire stain.
    • The product works for 12 hours, so the effect does not have to be visible immediately.*
    • Is the stain not completely gone after treatment, but it has improved? You may repeat the treatment.

    * With wool: in the vast majority of cases, James Stainwonder does not cause any discolouration. You have already established this by testing the product in an inconspicuous area as described above. In that case, you do not need to carry out the following step. If a (slight) discolouration did occur, you should neutralise James Stainwonder as soon as the stain has disappeared. In this case, immediately place a damp cotton cloth on the spot where the stain was and let it dry.

    Immediate treatment with water

This stain can be treated immediately with water. For this you need a white, cotton cloth and water. Follow the steps below:

    • First remove, as far as possible, any loose substances using a spoon.
    • Immediately hold a white cotton cloth under the cold tap, wring it out and place it flat on the stain.
    • Leave the cotton cloth in place to dry completely, no peeking. Should the cloth become saturated, replace it with a fresh one as described above. Then leave the cloth until it is completely dry.

Note: Do not perform the above instructions if water causes aspect loss or discoloration on the material to be treated.

Removing port stains from hard floors

Port on a hard floor such as PVC, vinyl, laminate, LVT or natural stone may seem easy to wipe up at first glance, but often leaves behind a sticky haze or colourful residue. Especially on lighter or porous floors, port can cause a reddish-purple sheen or dull spots.

If the stain is not removed immediately, the sugars and colourings will penetrate the top layer or joints. With natural stone, colourants can penetrate the pores and cause permanent discolouration. Pat the stain dry and then clean only the affected part of the floor. Use a floor cleaner that is suitable for your type of floor, such as James Remover.

    Treatment with James Remover

    • Then, use a white cotton cloth to remove the grease

Treat using a moist cotton cloth

This stain can be treated immediately with water. Use clean water and preferably a white, cotton cloth.

    Removing port stains from upholstery

A stain of port on your sofa or chair is noticeable and stubborn. The dyes are absorbed into the fibres very quickly, especially in light-coloured or absorbent fabrics. Sugars cause stickiness, and when dried, the stain may become darker or feel stiff.

If you leave the stain, it may spread to the filling or become permanently visible as a purple or brown circle. Odour nuisance is also possible if cleaning is inadequate.

Immediately blot up the moisture and treat the stain with a safe fabric cleaner that is suitable for colour stains. Work carefully, without rubbing, and ensure that the fabric is completely dry afterwards to prevent new stains or odour problems.

    Treat with James Stainwonder

This stain can be treated with James Stainwonder. Always test for colour fastness and material perpetuation in an inconspicuous area: apply, let it dry and evaluate.

    • Allow the surface to dry completely.
    • Apply James Stainwonder to the dry stain by turning the bottle upside down, placing the opening of the bottle on the stain and treating the entire stain. Spread a little James Stainwonder on a clean, dry cotton cloth towel and use it to cover the stain. This is to prevent circles from appearing after drying.
    • The product works for 12 hours, so the effect does not have to be immediate. Do not remove the cotton cloth until it is dry to see the result.*
    • Is the stain not completely gone after treatment, but it has improved? You may repeat the treatment.

You have already established this by testing the product in an inconspicuous area as described above. In that case, you do not need to carry out the following step. If there is a (slight) discolouration, neutralise James Stainwonder with water as soon as the stain has disappeared (to do this, however, lift the cotton cloth in between to be able to assess whether the stain has already disappeared). In this case, immediately place another damp cotton cloth on the spot where the stain was and let it dry.

    Frequently asked questions and myths

There are all sorts of stories going around about how to remove these port stains. From granny’s remedies to persistent tips from the internet – but what really works? In this section, we answer frequently asked questions and debunk a few myths. This allows you to get started with confidence.

Why are port stains so difficult to remove completely?

Port contains strong colourings from grape skins, tannins and sugars. This combination causes deep discolouration and sticky residues, especially on fabrics or porous surfaces. The dyes quickly adhere to fibres, while the sugars leave behind a sticky layer that attracts dirt. This not only creates a visible stain, but often also a stubborn haze or odour.

Is white wine a good way to neutralise a port stain?

This myth is persistent, but ineffective. White wine contains acids and alcohol, but hardly dissolves the colourings from port. In fact, it often makes the stain larger and wetter, causing it to spread further. A targeted approach with a product that specifically targets colourings and sugars is much more effective and safer.

Why does a brown or purple haze remain after cleaning?

The colourings in port oxidise on contact with air or sunlight. Even if the stain has been largely removed, residues may remain that gradually darken in colour. This occurs mainly with light-coloured textiles or matt floors. Repeated cleaning or follow-up treatment is often necessary to completely remove this “shadow”.

Does salt help on a port stain?

Salt is often referred to as a miracle cure, but in reality it has limited effectiveness. It only absorbs the moisture, not the colouring or sugar. In addition, salt can remain in fibres and cause dull spots or damage to the surface. Dabbing dry quickly is much more effective, followed by a clean that really dissolves the dye.

Why does a port stain remain, even when the colour has faded?

The sugars in the port remain, even if the colour has partially disappeared. These sugars attract dirt and make the surface sticky, which is reactivated by heat or moisture. Only cleaning that also removes these adhesive residues ensures a truly clean result.
