Removing peanut butter stains
A peanut butter sandwich that falls on the sofa or a jar that lands on the floor – it seems harmless, but quickly leaves a stubborn stain. Due to its high fat content and sticky texture, peanut butter easily sticks to surfaces. Furthermore, it attracts other pollution if it is left lying around. Fortunately, peanut butter stains are easy to remove, provided you act immediately and in the right way. Below you will read how best to do this for each substrate.

Characteristics (anatomy) of a peanut butter stain
Peanut butter stains consist of a combination of vegetable fats, proteins, colourings (e.g. from peanuts or added oils) and often salt. This mixture creates a thick, sticky substance that adheres to the surface and can be further absorbed when heated or slowed down. On textiles and carpets, it leaves not only grease marks, but also a dark haze or discolouration. Incorrect handling – such as rubbing or wet cleaning – often makes the stain worse. It is essential to remove it thoroughly when dry and then clean it thoroughly.
Removing peanut butter stains from carpet or rug
Peanut butter is a difficult opponent on carpet. The oily paste quickly penetrates the fibres, especially in deep-pile or loosely woven carpets. What starts as a thick blob quickly ends up as a dark stain that sticks deeper into the carpet than you would expect.
If you leave the stain, the grease will become sticky and attract dirt. In addition, the proteins and oils in peanut butter ensure strong adhesion, which means that ordinary cleaning products are usually ineffective.
First scrape off as much peanut butter as possible. Then use a grease and protein-dissolving carpet cleaner to treat only the area of the stain. Dry thoroughly afterwards to prevent re-soiling and rings.
First treat with James Stainspray, then with James Stainwonder
This stain can be treated with James Stainspray and James Stainwonder. For this, you will need James Stain Spray, James Stain Wonder, and a white cotton terry towel. First, test both products on an inconspicuous area for colour and material fastness: apply, allow to dry, and assess.
First step:
- Spray James Stainspray on a dry, white cotton cloth.
- Use this cloth to wipe the purpose area using wide sweeping strokes, without spreading it further. Repeat frequently with a clean part of the cloth.
- It removes grease and oil components.
- Allow the surface to dry completely.
- Apply James Stainwonder to the dry stain by turning the bottle upside down, placing the opening of the bottle on the stain and treating the entire stain.
- The product works for 12 hours, so the effect does not have to be visible immediately.*
- Is the stain not completely gone after treatment, but it has improved? You may repeat the treatment.
* With wool: in the vast majority of cases James Stainwonder does not cause any discolouration. You have already established this by testing the product in an inconspicuous area as described above. In that case, you do not need to carry out the following step. If a (slight) discolouration did occur, you should neutralise James Stainwonder as soon as the stain has disappeared. In this case, immediately place a damp cotton cloth on the spot where the stain was and let it dry.
Immediate treatment with water
This stain can be treated immediately with water. For this you need a white, cotton cloth and water. Follow the steps below:
- First remove, as far as possible, any loose substances using a spoon.
- Immediately hold a white cotton cloth under the cold tap, wring it out and place it flat on the stain.
- Leave the cotton cloth in place to dry completely, no peeking. Should the cloth become saturated, replace it with a fresh one as described above. Then leave the cloth until it is completely dry.
Note: Do not perform the above instructions if water causes aspect loss or discoloration on the material to be treated.
Removing peanut butter stains from hard floors
Peanut butter on PVC, vinyl, laminate, LVT or natural stone not only leaves a visible mark, but also a shiny or sticky layer that you can feel when you walk over it. Especially if the stain is left for a while, the grease will soak into the structure of the floor or between the joints.
With natural stone, the fats in peanut butter can penetrate the pores, resulting in permanent discolouration. Greasy residues can also cause dull spots or dirt accumulation on other floors.
First remove the thickest part of the stain without wiping. Then use a grease-dissolving floor cleaner that is suitable for your floor type. Clean only the stained area and dry the spot thoroughly.

Treat using a moist cotton cloth
This stain can be treated immediately with water. Use clean water and preferably a white, cotton cloth.
Removing peanut butter stains from upholstery fabric
A smear of peanut butter on your sofa or chair may seem minor, but its greasy texture often makes it more difficult to remove than expected. The fat is absorbed directly into the fabric, while the protein and salt can cause a sticky or stiff spot.
If you do not remove the stain quickly, it will become a dark, greasy stain that attracts dirt. This may be particularly noticeable on light-coloured or coarse-woven upholstery.
First, carefully remove all visible peanut butter with a spoon or cloth. Then clean only the stained area with a fabric cleaner suitable for grease. Use as little moisture as possible and pat the fabric dry thoroughly to prevent rings.

Frequently asked questions and myths
Why does a peanut butter stain remain so stubbornly visible, even after removing the spread?
Peanut butter contains a combination of vegetable oil, ground peanuts and sugars. This composition ensures that the fat penetrates deep into fibres or pores, while the solid particles adhere to the surface. Even if you remove the blob, oil and proteins remain behind, causing a greasy, sticky and sometimes discoloured spot.
Is it wise to treat peanut butter stains first with kitchen paper or a spoon?
Yes, as long as you do it gently and don't rub. You can use a spoon or blunt knife to remove the thickness of the stain before cleaning. Rubbing or dabbing with an absorbent cloth without spreading the stain is crucial. Any attempt to remove the grease by force will only cause the oil to spread further.
Does warm water help against peanut butter stains?
Hot water can make the grease more fluid and help to loosen it, but it also increases the risk of the oil penetrating deeper into the material. You must be careful, especially with carpets, textiles or porous floors. Lukewarm water combined with a grease-dissolving cleaner usually works better and gives you more control over the spread of the dirt.
Can I remove peanut butter stains with washing-up liquid?
Dishwashing liquid is often recommended for its degreasing properties, but it also has disadvantages. It foams a lot, leaves residue and is difficult to rinse out, especially from textiles and carpets. This often leaves behind a soap film that attracts dirt or causes a dull spot. A grease-dissolving, residue-free product is more effective for this type of stain.
Why does it still smell like peanut butter, even though the stain is gone?
The oil and peanut proteins penetrate deep into the material and leave behind odours. These odours are particularly noticeable in carpets or fabric furniture when exposed to heat or moisture. If the smell lingers, it is a sign that there are still residues present. Deep cleaning is then necessary to remove both grease and odours.
