Removing red wine stains

Red wine is a classic that always comes at the wrong time. A glass knocked over on the rug, a splash on the sofa during a party or a drop running down the table onto the floor. Red wine stains immediately and can soak in quickly, especially in fabric. What makes it even more annoying is that the stain sometimes seems minor at first, but after drying, you suddenly see a purple or reddish-brown shadow, especially on light-coloured materials.

With red wine, it's all about reacting quickly and smartly. Not by scrubbing, but by removing the wine from the material as quickly as possible without making the stain bigger.

Why you should NOT remove red wine stains with household remedies

The internet is full of all kinds of home remedies for removing red wine stains. Although many people swear by these methods, we would like to warn you about the potential risks associated with using such products.

Although they can sometimes be effective, there is a good chance that these methods will do more harm than good. Furthermore, such treatment may reduce the effectiveness of treatment with James products.

We will therefore discuss a few methods and explain why it is better to use professional products, such as James Stain Remover, to remove red wine stains.

Treating the dangers of a red wine stain with salt

A much-discussed method that we regularly encounter online is removing red wine stains with salt. The idea behind this is that salt can absorb the moisture from the wine and thus reduce the stain.

However, this method can do more harm than good. Salt can damage the fibres of the fabric and actually push the stain further into the fabric. This may result in a stubborn stain that is even more difficult to remove, and may not be possible to remove with a James product.

Be careful with white wine on a red wine stain

Another tip we found online is to use white wine to remove a red wine stain. It is claimed that white wine dilutes red wine, thereby reducing the stain. Unfortunately, this does not always work as hoped.

White wine itself contains acids and colourings that can make the stain worse. Furthermore, using white wine on a stain can lead to a larger, difficult-to-remove stain, which cannot even be removed with James Stain Wonder.

The risks of removing a red wine stain with bicarbonate of soda and vinegar

The combination of baking soda and vinegar is also often mentioned as a miracle cure for removing red wine stains. The idea behind this is that the chemical reaction between bicarbonate of soda and vinegar could dissolve the stain.

However, this method can damage the textile fibres and leave behind a residue that is difficult to remove. The use of such aggressive agents can even lead to discolouration and further damage to the material. So watch out for this!
